PAULSBORO Two incumbents were sworn in as borough council remained 6-0 in favor of the Democrats at the annual reorganization meeting on Tuesday night.

Larry Haynes Sr., who was sworn in by Gloucester County Freeholder Jean DuBois, begins his eighth term on council, as Elsie Tedeski starts her 10th year. Tedeski was sworn in by Mayor John Burzichelli. Both council members are anxious to continue to work on the Port of Paulsboro, a $250 million regional project, and to create jobs this year.

"Right now, our redevelopment is a top priority," said Haynes Sr. "I'm anxious for the port. It's going to be a boost."

Mayor Burzichelli acknowledges the tough year that lies in front of everyone. With the economy down and job loss high, Burzichelli says he and council members are prepared to build off of their strengths.

"I begin this year with great optimism," he said. "I believe we as a community are up to the challenge."

Haynes Sr. hopes to tackle these challenges by making a list of priorities. By enabling the help of fellow council members and the public, Haynes Sr. thinks real progress can be made if items of concern are clearly laid out and tackled by the local government.

Tedeski agrees and said that a high level of commitment is needed, especially in times of economic struggles. She wants to keep open a constant line of communication with all council members to discuss redevelopment ideas. Tedeski also wants to continue to work with the police on crime-free housing issues.

"We need to solve some problems in our neighborhoods," she said.

Haynes said some changes have already been made to help keep streets safer and to boost economic redevelopment. With the addition of a hotel and a couple of restaurants off of Exit 18 of Route 295, things are moving forward.

"We have all these things but we haven't seen a phase completed," said Haynes Sr. said. "We have to stay active and make sure things are getting done."

Haynes Sr., a lifelong Paulsboro resident, said he's enjoyed the progress the borough has made during his lifetime and is happy that over 20 years ago, someone on council encouraged him to run.

Raising three kids in the borough, as well as being involved in coaching youth sports and recreation, Haynes Sr. knew running for office was the right thing to do. He even resumed his post as council president, being sworn in by Gloucester County Freeholder Frank DiMarco.

"It's an honor to serve on this committee," said Haynes Sr. "For me, I mean it from the bottom of my heart."
